Horsham took just 94 seconds to open the scoring in
their latest away league game against Worthing Minors
Athletic. A positive start saw the ball crossed in from
Adam Ruz on the left and the ball fell nicely for the
unmarked Oliver East to convert right footed from 12
yards out.
The Hornets continued to press and, on 13 minutes, some
quick thinking from captain Jordan Walser spotted a good
run from Andrew Roberts and his long throw sent the
latter clear to side foot home with ease.
The home side then started to get a foothold in the game
as Horsham began to give the ball away cheaply. They
were unlucky not to pull a goal back on the half hour
mark when a well taken free-kick was headed onto the
crossbar by the Minors' striker and in the goalmouth
scramble that followed, their midfielder saw his effort
also come back off the 'bar before eventually being
cleared to safety.
Poor defending allowed Horsham to extend their lead when
a long goal kick travelled over the half way line and
the alert Callum Nash ran on to the loose ball before
easily side footing the ball past a stranded home
'keeper to make it 3-0. The goal lifted the Young
Hornets and Nash again went close with a header after
some good work and cross from East down the left. But it
was game over after 32 minutes when the impressive
Roberts turned his man on the left hand edge of the
penalty area and drilled a low left foot shot into the
bottom corner. Tom Auston made a good save just before
the break to ensure the Hornets went in 4-0 up.
H/T Worthing Minors Athletic 0 Horsham 4
The second half saw Horsham dominate possession and
continue to create opportunities; the lively Nash saw
his shot well blocked after a positive run. Ross
Williams then hit the bar after a good passing move
between Roberts and Ruz, before the introduction of
Rueben Selby down the right that started to cause
problems with his pace. And it was from one of these
runs that Nash added his second, and Horsham’s fifth, as
Selby pulled the ball back for Nash to finish with
aplomb.
Athletic offered some resistance but their chances were
limited to long range efforts, one of which just sailed
past the right hand upright from all of 35 yards. Nash
then completed his hat-trick with 18 minutes left on the
clock when a great through ball from left-back Glenn
Johnson sent the striker through and his header looped
over the advancing keeper.
There was still time for what looked liked a perfectly
good penalty shout to be turned down as Roberts was
pushed over in the box, before Williams hit a shot
straight at the ‘keeper when well placed, and Selby saw
his right foot shot come back off the post.
