PREVIEW:
John Maggs will keep faith with the side that beat Ashford Town during
the week when he leads his players to the 'other' Ashford this
Saturday, for a meeting with Maidstone United.
Although
beaten by Kingstonian last weekend, Maggs was sufficiently impressed
by the performances of youth players Adam Hutchings and Tony Nwachukwu
to give them both the full 90 minutes against the Ash Trees and their
reputations were further enhanced with eye-catching displays that
helped see off their in-form opponents. "The lads did very
well," said Maggs. "You could say that my hand has been forced
a little in throwing them both in to the side, given the injuries and
what have you, but all credit to them, they didn't let themselves down
and I was delighted to see them amongst the goals. It was a
good performance from the whole side and, to be fair, the big
difference on Tuesday was that we also had the rub of the green. That
may sound a bit odd after some of the refereeing decisions that went
against us but I thought we were excellent during the second half
against Kingstonian without anything really falling for us. On Tuesday
you can look at the penalty miss, the shot that's come back off the
post and a couple of other chances where they might have scored and
you think perhaps things are starting to go our way at last. Don't get
me wrong, though, I felt we were excellent value for the win and I'm
hoping that will give us the confidence to go to Maidstone and put in
another good performance."
Maidstone ended a run of 4 defeats with a 1-0
success at Carshalton last night, a result that sees them leapfrog the
Robins in to 16th place, and provided the club with a timely boost at
the end of a troubled couple of weeks in which they had been dumped
out of both the FA Trophy and League Cup, while Tuesday night's 3-0
loss at home to Hendon spelt the end of the road for joint managers
Alan Walker and Lloyd Hume.
Reserve team manager Peter Nott has been handed the
managerial reins until the end of the season, with his primary aim to
secure Ryman Premier Division football next season, and he will no
doubt be hoping to improve on a dismal 'home' record that has returned
just 7 points from 11 games. Just one goal divided the two sides when
they met in the reverse fixture at Gorings Mead in October, Jack Lyons
netting early in the second half. |
