PREVIEW:
Horsham will look to move in to the promotion play-off places on
Tuesday night with victory at struggling Carshalton Athletic. John
Maggs' side were left kicking their heels at the weekend after heavy
snow caused the postponement of their match at Maidstone United but
the manager believes that his players will be stronger for the
unscheduled break. "It was disappointing not to have played on
Saturday because we were hoping to take the momentum of the Ashford
game in to the match and
we felt confident that we could have got something from it. But, on the
plus side, it has given Ben Andrews (groin) and Claude Seanla (virus)
a couple more days to recover so we'll be virtually at full strength
for the trip to Carshalton."
Maggs has
vowed to keep to his weekend promise of fielding an unchanged side
from that which beat Ashford 4-1 so teenagers Josh Pelling, Adam
Hutchings and Tony Nwachukwu will start the match with new signing
Chris Riley expected to be among the travelling party after his
recent arrival from Ebbsfleet United.
Having been installed as the 6/1 second favourites for this season's
Premier Division title, Carshalton's season can best be described as
one of massive underachievement. Three successive victories at the
start of the campaign heightened the pre-season expectation around
Colston Avenue but the resignation of manager Hayden Bird in
September, and just 4 further wins in 22 matches, has left the club's
supporters fearing a relegation battle just 12 months after seeing
their side miss out on promotion in a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out.
Although the club has suffered a number of high profile departures
this season, Liam Harwood, Jamie England and Charlie Ide among them,
there remains no shortage of talent in the Robins' side with the
prolific Richard Jolly leading the goalscoring charts again alongside
former pro Craig Faulconbridge, a player who likened himself to Wayne
Rooney in a recent interview with the Non-League Paper !
Recent meetings between the 2 sides have seldom failed to disappoint,
with 23 goals being shared in 6 matches, and it was the proverbial
game of 2 halves at Gorings Mead in September when Nwachukwu inspired
the Hornets to a second half comeback to overturn a 2-0 deficit and
emerge with a point from a 2-2 draw.
Carshalton are giving free admission to U18s for the rest of the season,
upon presentation of appropriate ID |
