30-OCT-2007: Warrilow linked with
Tonbridge job |
|
Horsham boss John Maggs has expressed
his disappointment at the news that his assistant, Tommy Warrilow, has
been named as one of several candidates for the vacant manager's
position at divisional rivals Tonbridge Angels following today's
dismissal of Tony Dolby. Maggs has always been quick to praise
Warrilow's contributions, insisting that the club's recent successes
wouldn't have been achieved without his input and drive. "I'm not
surprised that Tommy's hat has been thrown in to the ring," admitted
Maggs. "He's been excellent for me and he's always maintained that
he'd like to have a crack at management so I couldn't stand in his way
if he was offered the job. Yes, it has come at a critical time for us,
what with the FA Cup tie coming up but that's football. We shall have
to wait and see what the next couple of days brings and take it from
there. Of course I don't want him to leave but my relationship with
Tommy means that I couldn't stand in his way if the chance presented
itself. Personally, I think he'd make an excellent manager." |

28-OCT-2007: Chippenham Town 2
Horsham 3 |
|
Horsham weathered a late storm before claiming
their place in the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 41
years. After a fairly uneventful first half Lewis Taylor, Simon Austin and
Carl Rook put the Hornets in the driving seat but Chippenham pulled two goals
back in the final quarter of an hour to keep the visiting fans on the edge of
their seats before celebrating a famous victory. There was a slight feeling of
anti-climax when the draw paired Horsham with Maidenhead United but both sides
will fancy their chances of making it through to the 2nd round when they meet
in two weeks time.

26-OCT-2007: County League opposition
again for Hornets |
|
Horsham will host Wick in the 3rd round
of the Sussex Senior Cup after being paired with the County Leaguers
following Tuesday's victory over Rustington. The Littlehampton based
club are currently 5th in the County League Division One table but are
in a poor run of form of late with their 3-0 win against Arundel in
the 2nd round representing their only success in six games. No date
has yet been set for this fixture. |

23-OCT-2007: Horsham 2 Rustington 0 |
|
Horsham had a comfortable, if
unspectacular, passage through to the 3rd round of the Sussex Senior Cup with
a 2-0 win against County League Division two side Rustington. A goal in each
half from Chamal Fenelon and Kevin Hemsley was enough to secure the victory
but there was little for the healthy sized crowd of 283 to get excited about
as the Hornets rarely got out of second gear and, although debuting goalkeeper
Paul Seuke was forced into a couple of saves, the visitors posed little in the
way of an attacking threat despite the backing of a good number who had made
the short journey up from the coast.

22-OCT-2007: Maggs set to sign new
'keeper |
|
John Maggs is set to sign former Dulwich
Hamlet goalkeeper Paul Seuke after the player verbally agreed terms
with the Hornets' boss this morning. The 24 year old joined AFC
Wimbledon during the summer from Conference South side Yeading and was
on the bench for both of the recent FA Cup meetings with the Hornets.
Seuke is a proven goalkeeper at Ryman Premier League level and has
appeared for Staines Town, Chertsey Town, Dulwich Hamlet and
Carshalton Athletic and is expected to make his debut in tomorrow's
Sussex Senior Cup tie against Rustington. |

20-OCT-2007: Ramsgate 2 Horsham 3 |
|
Horsham progressed through to
the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Trophy with victory at Ramsgate this
afternoon but not before a late fightback by the hosts that threatened to take
this tie to a replay. The Hornets led 3-0 through goals by Simon Austin, Jacob
Mingle and a first in Horsham colours for 2nd half substitute, Chamal Fenelon,
before Shaun Welford hit two goals in the last nine minutes to make it a nervy
finale for the travelling supporters. The Rams were denied a sensational
comeback when Scott Holden's injury time header smacked against the woodwork.

19-OCT-2007: Leeds United - An
apology from John Lines |
On behalf of Horsham Football Club, I
would like to apologise to anyone who tried to attend the Leeds United
training session today and were not allowed into the ground. Leeds'
manager Dennis Wise advised us upon his arrival that he was not at all
happy to allow anyone into the session as they had a number of new set
plays that they needed to rehearse, This included the directors and
other Horsham committee members who were asked to go inside whilst
they practised them. I am pleased to say, however, that they allowed
some photographs to be taken of normal training and provided us with a
signed shirt and other memorabilia. Dennis and his assistant Gus Poyet,
in particular, were indeed extremely charming and grateful for our
hospitality and are more than happy to reciprocate if ever we ever
find ourselves playing in the North of England.

17-OCT-2007: Horsham 1 AFC Wimbledon
1 (Horsham win 5-4 on penalties) |
|
Horsham booked themselves a date
with Chippenham Town thanks to a nailbiting penalty shoot-out victory against
AFC Wimbledon in this replayed FA Cup 3rd qualifying round tie. It was a night
of high drama at the Atspeed Stadium as Lewis Taylor gave the Hornets the lead
after just 4 minutes only for Dons skipper Jason Goodliffe to equalise 13
minutes later in front of a passionate crowd of over 1200 who generated a
cracking atmosphere under the lights. Gary Charman might have won the game for
Horsham with just two minutes of normal time remaining but, after an extra
period of half an hour failed to separate the sides, it came down to the
dreaded penalty shoot-out. Alan Mansfield saved the visitors' first effort
from Sam Hatton and Taylor saw his shot brilliantly saved by Andy Little but
Mark Beard's miss proved decisive, sending his shot in to the car park, before
Lee Carney clinched Horsham's first ever victory against the Dons.

15-OCT-2007: Horsham Football Club to
feature in TV show |
|
Horsham may still be two
victories away from a possible appearance on Match of the Day but striker Lee
Farrell comes under the spotlight this week as the BBC's See, Hear programme
takes a look at the obstacles facing deaf footballers. A team of cameramen and
reporters visited the club recently to talk to Lee and his father about how he
has overcome his difficulties to reach the pinnacle of his career, a place in
the GB representative side. The programme can be seen on BBC2 this Wednesday,
17th October at 1pm.

13-OCT-2007: AFC Wimbledon 0 Horsham
0 |
|
Horsham earned themselves a
lucrative replay after holding AFC Wimbledon to a goalless draw in this
afternoon's FA Cup 3rd qualifying round tie. The Hornets have yet to beat the
Dons in a competitive fixture and can count themselves fortunate to have
another crack at their opponents after being second best for much of a
disappointing encounter played in front of a meagre 1500 crowd. The Dons
created at least half a dozen opportunities to break the deadlock but were
denied by some desperate defending and poor finishing. John Maggs' side failed
to create much themselves and will need to put in an improved display in
Tuesday's replay if they are to progress to the final qualifying round for the
first time in six seasons.

09-OCT-2007: Horsham 2 Staines Town 4 |
|
Horsham's 100% home record was
shattered by an impressive display from Staines Town who climbed above the
Hornets in the table thanks to an inspired performance from their leading
scorer, Mark Nwokeji. The former Walton & Hersham striker proved a constant
threat to the home defence and was among the scorers as the Swans swept into a 4-1 lead
inside 47 minutes. Gary Charman made it 4-2 with more than half an hour
remaining but, despite the introduction of Lee Farrell and Lewis Taylor,
Horsham were unable to get themselves back in the game and were well beaten at
the close.

08-OCT-2007: Eastbourne cup tie date
announced |

Horsham's Isthmian League Cup 3rd round
tie against Eastbourne Town will take place at the Saffrons on
Wednesday 14th November, kick-off 7.45pm. |
|
06-OCT-2007: Horsham 4 Wealdstone 0 |
|
Simon
Austin doubled his goal tally for the season with a brace as Horsham recorded
a comfortable win over Wealdstone this afternoon. The former Maidstone striker
opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a stunning volley and added a
second, five minutes later, heading home John Westcott's cross. Any hopes the
Stones had of making a game of it were dashed a minute after the break when
Carl Rook moved into double figures for the season and the scoring was
completed in the 86th minute by a piledriver from Nigel Brake. Wealdstone's
misery was compounded by the dismissal of their captain, Chris O'Leary, ten
minutes from the end. Horsham remain in second place, two points behind
leaders Hendon who maintained their impressive start to the season with a 2-0
success at Carshalton Athletic. Full report and goals

05-OCT-2007: Horsham to visit the
Saffrons for League Cup tie |
|
Today's draw for the
3rd round of the Isthmian League Cup sends Horsham along the coast to
Eastbourne and a date with Ryman League Division One (South) side
Eastbourne Town. Town are enjoying their first ever season in the
Isthmian League after winning the Sussex County League for the first
time in 30 years and currently sit in 17th place with 6 points from
their opening 7 fixtures. The match is scheduled to take place at the
Saffrons during the week commencing Monday 12th November. |

02-OCT-2007: Horsham 4 Hastings
United 0 |
|
Horsham made it five wins in a
row after cruising to victory in a competitive League Cup tie against ten man
Hastings United tonight. Tom Graves got the Hornets off to the perfect start,
firing spectacularly home after just eight minutes, and a lively opening saw
the visitors strike the post through Danny Ellis, four minutes later. The game
was effectively won in a five minute spell, early in the second half, that saw
the dismissal of Kevin Rose sandwiched between a brace of goals from Jacob
Mingle and substitute Gary Charman completed the scoring with a diving header,
nine minutes from time.

01-OCT-2007: John Maggs reflects on a
money-spinning cup tie |
|
Horsham boss John Maggs believes that a
trip to AFC Wimbledon holds no fears for his side as they look to make
it through to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup for the 3rd time
in 8 seasons. "It's a great tie," admitted Maggs. "The win against
Bury has meant so much to the club. Not only do we bank £3,750 but
we'll go to Wimbledon, play in front of one of the biggest, if not the
biggest, crowds of the day and bank another £6-7k and, if we win,
that's another five grand for us. It's a massive draw !" Horsham have
yet to beat the Dons in 8 meetings in cup and league, and were beaten
1-0 in last season's FA Cup, but Maggs believes that his team has
every chance of causing an upset. "We're on a good run at the moment.
We're 2nd in the league, they've not had the best of starts and I do
believe that we can go there and get a result." The clubs are in
discussions over the kick-off time with the match currently scheduled
to be played at 3pm on Saturday 13th October - the same time as
England's crucial European Championship qualifier against Estonia.

01-OCT-2007: Hornets given tough task
in Cup |
|
Horsham have been given scant reward for
their exciting victory over Bury Town on Saturday after being drawn
against AFC Wimbledon in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.
Boss John Maggs was hopeful of a home tie but, after seeing off
Arundel and Bury at the Atspeed Stadium, the Hornets must travel to
the Dons' Kingsmeadow ground in what is a repeat of last season's
first qualifying round tie. That game, played in front a crowd of
almost 2,000, went the way of the hosts thanks to Darren Grieves' 90th
minute header but the Dons are struggling to live up their title
favourites tag this season and are currently languishing in 15th place
with just 3 wins from their 9 league games although they will be
hoping to draw some confidence from Saturday's 5-1 thrashing of
