29-MAR-2008: AFC Wimbledon 2 Horsham 4

Lewis Taylor scored one of the goals of the season as Horsham pulled off an amazing victory at 2nd placed AFC Wimbledon to effectively end the Dons' slim title hopes and keep their own play-off chances alive. Trailing to Daniel Webb's 7th minute opener it looked like John Maggs' side were in for another heavy defeat but Horsham put in a superb display in wet and blustery conditions and, after Lee Farrell had scrambled home a close range equaliser on 21 minutes, Taylor took centre stage against his former club by sending an audacious 25 yard volley sailing over Dons' 'keeper James Pullen to give the visitors a sensational half-time lead. The hosts' expected second half onslaught failed to materialise but they were given a helping hand when Kevin Hemsley was adjudged to have blocked Lewis Christon's shot illegally and Chris Hussey equalised from the penalty spot. However, parity lasted just 2 minutes when the excellent Dwain Clarke curled a spectacular effort inside the far post and Farrell wrapped things up in injury time when he outstripped the defence before shooting in to the corner. The win sees Horsham occupy the final play-off place while Chelmsford City, 1-0 winners at Tonbridge Angels this afternoon, need just 1 more point to be assure of the league title. Match report and goals are now on-line

27-MAR-2008: Mansfield returns but Charman is out for the season

Gary Charman looks set to miss the remainder of the season after an x-ray revealed he has two broken ribs. The long serving winger picked up the injury in Saturday's 2-0 win at Boreham Wood and has been ruled out for 3-8 weeks. Goalkeeper Paul Seuke is nursing a 'severely dead leg' that makes him doubtful for Saturday's trip to AFC Wimbledon, prompting manager John Maggs to recall Alan Mansfield from his brief stay at Horsham YMCA. "Paul may still make it," explained Maggs, "but, while we've still got a shout of the play-offs, I can't afford to take any chances so Alan will definitely travel to Wimbledon with us. Gary is a massive blow for us and, with only 6 games left, I would think it's unlikely that he'll play again this season."

27-MAR-2008: Groundshare and Holbrook latest

Following reports in newspapers yesterday, Horsham Football Club can confirm that negotiations with Crawley Town FC have ceased following unviable financial demands sought by Crawley Town not previously brought to our attention. We are continuing with other proposals and it is hoped an announcement can be made within the next two weeks. Until then we are categorically unable to make further comment. I am happy to announce, however, that our Planning Consultant, Mr Doug Cramond has now submitted the Planning Application for the new ground at Holbrook to Horsham District Council and it is with much enthusiasm we go forward.    John Lines, Hon. Club Secretary

26-MAR-2008: Shoreham 0 Horsham 2

Stuart Myall marked his return from injury with the first goal in Horsham's 2-0 Brighton Charity Cup success at a rain lashed Shoreham tonight. The experienced full-back showed no signs of the broken metatarsal that has kept him out of the last 7 matches when he cut inside and drilled a shot into the bottom corner of the net in the 22nd minute of a closely fought first half. Under 18s goalkeeper Tom Baxter enjoyed a fine debut, playing the entire match and making several good saves, before Kevin Hemsley grabbed his 2nd goal in 5 days when he tapped home from close range, 10 minutes from the end, to put the holders in to the semi-finals alongside Pagham, Ringmer and East Preston or Storrington.

24-MAR-2008: Angels fail to spread Easter cheer as Hornets crash to defeat

Tonbridge Angels gained revenge for their Boxing Day drubbing by recording a 3-0 win to maintain their own play-off ambitions whilst putting a dent in the promotion hopes of John Maggs' side. After their win at Boreham Wood on Saturday, the Hornets were in confident mood ahead of the 'crunch' match with the Angels, now of course under the guidance of Maggs' former assistant Tommy Warrilow, and their chances of success were boosted with the news that former leading scorer Carl Rook was unavailable due to suspension. However, a poor performance from the hosts saw the Kent side take the lead on 36 minutes through Fraser Logan and Akwashi Edusei extended the lead, 8 minutes in to the second half. Horsham offered little threat in front of goal and Tommy Tyne completed the scoring before the end before Lewis Taylor's dismissal for dissent compounded Horsham's misery. Full report...

The Easter weekend had begun in promising fashion with a 2-0 success at Boreham Wood on Saturday with Simon Austin and Kevin Hemsley grabbing the first half goals that sent the Hornets back in to the play-off frame

18-MAR-2008: Staines Town 4 Horsham 0

Horsham suffered a night to forget as they were blown away by fellow promotion hopefuls Staines Town who put 4 goals past the Hornets for the second time this season. Hopes of building on Saturday's success against Ashford Town were quickly extinguished as the pace and skill of Mark Nwokeji and Howard Newton soon had the visitors' defence at sixes and sevens with Paul Seuke called upon to make his first save after just 2 minutes. Some resolute defending, and no little luck, helped keep the game goalless until the 39th minute when Nwokeji claimed his 31st goal of the campaign by tapping home Newton's cross. Lee Carney came close to levelling the scores before the interval but Horsham could consider themselves fortunate to be only a goal behind. The second half was a different story, though, as the Swans dominated from start to finish and they doubled their advantage on 52 minutes when Newton again provided the cross, this time for Andre Scarlett to head home. Gary Charman put a volley wide of the mark but his was an isolated effort on the Staines goal and Richard Butler emphasised the hosts' superiority with a 3rd goal, 5 minutes from time, after Seuke spilled a cross-shot from Marc Charles-Smith. A last minute penalty from Dave Sargent, after Tom Graves had felled Newton in the box, wrapped things up for the Swans who move in to 3rd place in the Ryman Premier Division table leaving Horsham to regroup in time for the vital Easter weekend fixtures. 16-MAR-2008: Howie does his bit

Horsham's very own Howie the Hornet joined more than 600 runners in Horsham Park this morning to help raise money for Sport Relief, the fundraising initiative from Comic Relief aimed at helping vulnerable people in the UK and across the world's poorest countries. The wet conditions did little to dampen the spirits of Howie and his co-runner, loyal Hornets fan Al Morris, whose combined efforts earned over £ 300. You can read all about Howie's day on his own pages but we say a huge WELL DONE to them both, and also to Andy Meadus who generously donated his raffle prize from yesterday's game.

16-MAR-2008: Maggs calls for patience

John Maggs has asked fans to be patient as events on and off the field move towards their uncertain conclusion. In yesterday's programme notes, Maggs said "When things are not going well, both on and off the pitch, people are at a low. I appeal to you to be patient. Everything is being done off the field that can be done and I will attempt to get things back to normal on the field to keep us in contention right to the end. You must not forget what a great season it has been and we still have everything to play for. Stay with us, we are all on the same side, and we will turn things around." Yesterday's win pushed the Hornets back in to the play-off places and, with further meetings scheduled to be held this week with Crawley Council and representatives of the Ryman League, the club is optimistic of a bright future.

15-MAR-2008: Horsham 2 Ashford Town (Mx) 1

Horsham put their off the field worries behind them to register a deserved 2-1 success against the division's form side that was as entertaining as it was crucial to their play-off ambitions. Danny Davis got things under way after just 3 minutes with his first goal for the club and the Hornets dominated possession, creating several chances to increase their lead, but it was the same old story when, on 19 minutes, the visitors produced an equaliser when Gavin Smith headed home from close range. A competitive second half produced chances at both ends but it was Davis' half-time replacement, Simon Austin, who earned the points when he converted Jacob Mingle's fine pass on 68 minutes. Horsham are now 5th in the Ryman League Premier Division table with 9 matches left to play. Full report and goals here

15-MAR-2008: Maggs excited by new signing

John Maggs expressed his excitement at securing the services of former Lewes midfielder Dwain Clarke today. The 29 year old put pen to paper this morning but his registration came too late for inclusion in the squad that faced Ashford Town and an agreement with Staines Town means that the the ex-Swans man won't be permitted to turn out against his previous employers on Tuesday night. Clarke has Football Conference experience with Aldershot Town and Canvey Island and also lists Harrow Borough, Farnborough Town and Maidenhead United among his former clubs. Horsham fans will be hoping he can reproduce the sort of devastating form he displayed against the Hornets for Lewes back in 2003 when he helped the Rooks to a 6-1 win.

13-MAR-2008: Ward and Rayner on the move

John Maggs has cited travel issues as the reason behind his decision to release midfielder Jason Ward after just 6 appearances. The former Millwall apprentice joined the Hornets in February, making his debut at Billericay Town, but has made the move to Croydon Athletic after difficulties in travelling from his Bromley home. "He showed signs of being a decent player," said Maggs "but it was difficult for him to get to training sessions on time and he feels that he would be better off with a different club."
Also on the move is Ben Rayner who has returned to Carshalton Athletic.

12-MAR-2008 Shoreham 0 Horsham 0 (Match abandoned)

Tonight's Brighton Charity Cup tie was abandoned at half-time due to floodlight failure at Shoreham's Middle Road ground. A partial black out occurred during the first half but play was allowed to continue until the interval when the match officials decided to abandon the game. The match will be replayed on Wednesday 26th March.

11-MAR-2008: Maggs goes it alone as Kenworthy departs

Horsham Football Club have announced that they have parted company with assistant manager Alan Kenworthy. The former Brighton & Hove Albion coach was appointed as successor to Tommy Warrilow in January but a series of poor performances led to his departure yesterday afternoon. "It's regrettable," lamented manager John Maggs," but things haven't worked out the way we hoped so I've had to let Alan go. He's a smashing fella and I would like to place on record my appreciation of his hard work and commitment to this football club."

08-MAR-2008: Harrow Borough 4 Horsham 0

Horsham's play-off hopes took another blow after crashing to their heaviest league defeat of the season at Harrow Borough yesterday. The Hornets hadn't won at Harrow for 40 years and were up against it from the moment Daniel Brown put the hosts ahead on 24 minutes. Three goals in nine second half minutes made it a miserable afternoon for the travelling fans when Jonathan Constant and Victor Asombang exposed the visitors' pedestrian rearguard by racing through unopposed to score and Lee Hall fired home after more sloppy defending to leave John Maggs with a huge test of his managerial skills if he is to prevent a season that promised so much from disintegrating in front of his eyes. Full report...

07-MAR-2008: Groundshare proposals turned down

The club's proposals to groundshare with Crawley Town on a temporary basis from next season have collapsed after the Ryman League refused Horsham FC's application on the grounds that it would be 'logistically impossible' to guarantee that games could be played on consecutive days, a scenario that could see fixtures disrupted and 'cause prejudice to other member clubs in the league'. We were also given false hopes that we might have been able to extend our stay at Queen Street for one further season, a decision that has now been denied us to the obvious anger of the club's board. A contingency had already been drawn up in anticipation of these events and it is hoped that a further announcement can be made in 2-3 weeks time.

05-MAR-2008: Bucket collection raises over £300

Club treasurer John Newell would like to thank everyone who contributed to a bucket collection made on Saturday in the memory of Herve King, the Ringmer defender who so tragically passed away last month. A total of £ 343.40 was raised and will be forwarded to Ringmer Football Club.

04-MAR-2008: Harlow Town 1  Horsham 1

James Bunn's headed equaliser, 7 minutes from time, denied Horsham a precious win from tonight's Ryman Premier Division clash at Harlow Town. Horsham deservedly led at the break through Eddie French's first goal of the season, just moments after Lewis Taylor had rattled the Hawks' crossbar, but the visitors' hopes of ending a winless three match streak were dashed when Simon Austin was controversially dismissed by referee MaGill with just over half an hour remaining. Danny Davis spurned an opportunity to extend the lead when he shot over from close range but Horsham's recent inability to hold on to a lead continued with Bunn's late leveller that leaves the Hornets in 5th place in the table. 03-MAR-2008: Lovegrove departs and there's bad news for Myall

The player merry-go-round continues at Queen Street with the news that recent signing Dean Lovegrove has been released after revealing that he is due to fly to the States on Friday. "Evidently he's going off to America for a fortnight with a view to staying over there for 4 years," revealed a disappointed John Maggs who only discovered the former Worthing man's plans last Thursday. "I didn't see that there was any point in playing him on Saturday if he's not going to be a part of our plans any more so I left him out of the side" Maggs explained. Meanwhile, Stuart Myall's week went from bad to worse when an x-ray discovered a hairline fracture of his metatarsal picked up in Saturday's defeat against Hendon. The popular defender, sent off for the first time in his Horsham career at Chelmsford last week, is likely to be out for up to 4 weeks.

01-MAR-2008: Horsham 1 Hendon 2

Hendon climbed above Horsham in to 3rd place in the Ryman Premier Division table thanks to Belal Aiteouakrim's injury time strike that secured the visitors their first league win of the year. The Hornets led by Lee Farrell's 11th goal of the season and were good value for their lead at the interval but Jacob Mingle missed a decent chance to make it 2-0 and Hendon hit back with an equaliser on 72 minutes when leading scorer Brian Haule prodded home from close range. The second half was a fairly scrappy affair with good football in short supply on a hard pitch and the home fans' misery was compounded when Aiteouakrim fired past Seuke in the closing minutes to register the Hornets second home defeat in a week.
