30-SEP-2009: Horsham 'old boy' reminisces on 'happiest days of my life'

Supporters flicking through the pages of Bognor's 'Rocks Review' matchday magazine at the weekend might well have spotted a reprint of the report from the 1946 Sussex Senior Cup tie between the two sides, submitted by former Hornet Peter Wilkins. The 16 year old Wilkins was a member of the Horsham side that prevailed 3-1 in that Queen Street meeting and he was keen to reminisce on his time with the club that spanned 9 years when we  caught up with him during the Summer. 28-SEP-2009: Maggs threatens to ring the changes after cup setback

John Maggs has threatened to ring the changes after his side's dismal Senior Cup defeat at Bognor at the weekend. The Hornets' boss has grown increasingly frustrated at his players' Jekyll & Hyde performances and a worrying defensive fallibility that has seen them fail to keep a clean sheet in 8 games. Speaking earlier today, Maggs admitted "I share the fans' frustrations. Its not good enough and we've let the players know it. They put in a tremendous display at Kingstonian and then we were dreadful at Bognor. All 3 of their (Bognor) goals came from mistakes and we have to look at why that's happening. I didn't think we showed anything in midfield and my central defenders have set a very high standard but they're well short of that at the moment". Maggs, who was without the injured Mark Knee for the trip to Nyewood Lane, will be forced to shuffle his defensive pack again with the impending suspension of Anthony Acheampong and hasn't ruled out the possibility of playing striker Ben Andrews in the middle, a position Andrews was used to during his time at Worthing. "If we can get Claude back then that would be the logical thing to do but, otherwise, it would leave us short up top. We need to look at what we've got but I think we'll see a few changes for next Saturday."

27-SEP-2009: Hendon match postponed

The Hornets will face a likely midweek trip to Hendon after their Ryman League fixture, scheduled for October 10th, was postponed due to the Middlesex club's FA Cup involvement. The Greens defeated Kingstonian 2-1 in yesterday's all-Premier Division tie at Vale Farm to move in to the 3rd Qualifying round alongside Ashford (Mx), 10-0 winners over Badshot Lea, Wealdstone, Tooting & Mitcham (conquerors of Horsham in the previous round) Sutton United and Tonbridge Angels for whom Carl Rook scored twice in a 4-0 success against Horsham YMCA.

26-SEP-2009: Bognor Regis Town 3 Horsham 2

Horsham suffered a miserable afternoon in the Bognor sunshine, crashing out of the Sussex Senior Cup with this demoralising defeat. Having turned round a 1-0 half-time deficit, the Hornets hit back to lead through goals from Jack Lyons and Sam Page, but the introduction of Rocks substitute Richard Greenfield swung the match in the hosts' favour and he grabbed the equaliser with just 6 minutes remaining. Jason Prior scored the decisive goal during the first half of extra time to dump Horsham out of a second cup competition inside 2 weeks and their misery was complete when substitute James Nicholls was shown a red card, just minutes after coming on. Five more players were booked and Lee Carney was helped off the pitch with a knee injury on a thoroughly depressing afternoon for the Horsham followers. Full report....

24-SEP-2009: Bognor Regis Town v Horsham: MATCH PREVIEW

Alex Haddow makes his first return to Bognor since joining Horsham last Summer but Mark Knee will miss out on a reunion with his former team-mates having being told to rest after being knocked out during Monday's loss at Kingstonian. Saturday's match, a Sussex Senior Cup tie, has been brought forward to fill a blank weekend after both sides' early exit from the FA Cup. More...

22-SEP-2009: Davies sidelined by ankle break

Steve Davies could be out for up to 2 months after being told that he has a fractured ankle. The striker, converted to a highly effective midfielder by John Maggs, will be in plaster for 5 weeks after picking up the injury in Saturday's win at Margate. Meanwhile Jack Page hopes to return to training this week, and could be in contention for a place in the squad for Saturday's trip to Bognor, after having a cortisone injection to help treat an ongoing hip problem.

22-SEP-2009: Maggs recalls horror clash

ohn Maggs described the moments Horsham's match at Kingstonian almost turned to tragedy after defender Mark Knee was left unconscious following a horrifying collision. "He's taken one hell of a whack on the side of his head that put him out cold immediately," recalled the manager. "Fortunately Ben and Andi were alert to it and they managed to sort him out after he swallowed his tongue but, when I got over to him, his face was all contorted because he suffered a spasm and his eyes were rolling. They tried to get him to his feet but he just collapsed and they had to make him sit up on the stretcher to stop him from swallowing his tongue again." Mark was transferred to Kingston Hospital where he was released, just after midnight, suffering from 'a really bad headache'.

21-SEP-2009: Kingstonian 2 Horsham 1

A failure to defend set-pieces proved Horsham's undoing as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at in-form Kingstonian tonight, where the hosts extended their unbeaten run to 6 matches thanks to first half headers from Simon Huckle and  Karl Beckford. The Hornets deserved more than Ben Andrews' second half goal but the result became almost secondary when a sickening collision saw Mark Knee knocked unconscious inside the Ks penalty area, with unconfirmed reports that the experienced full-back had swallowed his tongue. Knee was taken to hospital by ambulance amid concerns from an ashen-faced Andi Marfleet. Full report...

20-SEP-2009: Kingstonian v Horsham: MATCH PREVIEW

20-SEP-2009: Hornets drop a place after Hendon victory

Horsham dropped down to 11th in the Ryman Premier Division table after Hendon's 2-0 victory over Cray Wanderers this afternoon. Goals from Yacine Hamada and Jamie Busby propelled the Greens up to 7th but The Hornets could overtake them and climb into the top 4 with victory at Kingstonian tomorrow night.

20-SEP-2009: Margate 1 Horsham 3

The Hornets made light of the absence of Lee Carney and Ben Andrews to record a fine 3-1 win at Margate on Saturday to help banish their FA Cup blues. Pat Harding gave the visitors the lead on 30 minutes with an opportunistic strike and an Alex Haddow penalty gave Horsham a deserved 2-0 lead at the break. Harding increased the advantage with a powerful shot on 74 minutes and the hosts could only muster an 88th minute consolation from Joe Healy in reply. Full report...

14-SEP-2009: Maggs reflects on FA Cup disappointment

The disappointment of Saturday's FA Cup defeat was still in evidence when Hornets Review caught up with John Maggs this afternoon to reflect on our dramatic 1st Qualifying Round exit at the hands of Tooting & Mitcham. More..

12-SEP-2009: Tooting & Mitcham 4 Horsham 2

There were controversial scenes at Tooting & Mitcham's Imperial Fields this afternoon where Horsham were dumped out the FA Cup at the first hurdle, thanks to two late goals. With the score sitting at 2-2, and both sides looking towards a replay, referee Ian Bentley stunned the travelling fans by awarding a 90th minute penalty and a red card against Rob Tolfrey for an alleged stamp on Jason Henry. Matt York beat Paul Seuke from the spot and the Hornets' misery was completed when Jamie Byatt made it 4-2 to the hosts in injury time. The match hadn't begun too well for John Maggs' side either, falling behind to Paul Vines' 5th minute header, but they turned things around to lead 2-1 through goals from Ben Andrews and Pat Harding only for the Terrors to take advantage of more controversial officiating when Bentley ignored an apparent head injury to Lee Carney enabling Simon Parker to equalise.

11-SEP-2009: Charman gives Hornets FA Cup tonic

Gary Charman has provided the club with a timely boost ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie at Tooting & Mitcham after coming through last night's training session with no ill-effects from the back injury that forced him out of the last 4 matches. "Gary saw a specialist this week and looked great in training so we're delighted to have him back ahead of schedule, and even happier to have him in the squad for Saturday," said John Maggs. However, Claude Seanla's hopes of being included in the travelling party were dashed after his failure to recover from a hamstring problem has ruled him out of contention.

10-SEP-2009: Tooting & Mitcham v Horsham: FA CUP PREVIEW

The Hornets hit the FA Cup trail again this Saturday with a visit to Tooting & Mitcham United for a First Qualifying Round tie (kick-off 3pm). John Maggs has yet to lose at Tooting, as manager of Horsham FC, but that statistic is sure to be tested this weekend by the side currently in 2nd place in the Ryman Premier Division table. More...

08-SEP-2009: Howie's Number One !

Club mascot Howie the Hornet is fast becoming the one to beat after enjoying his most successful summer ever while participating in a number of charitable events during the past months. While some of us might have been taking full advantage of the casual inactivity of the English holiday season, Howie was hard at work in his quest to spread the good name of Horsham Football Club across the south and you can read Matt Haynes' report on how our furry friend got on here.

06-SEP-2009: Under 13s kick-off season with big win

Today saw the start of the youth league season and there were mixed results for Horsham's representative sides. Pride of place goes to Brian Skett's U13 side who put 12 goals past Highdown Saints without reply but the U16s were left frustrated when their match with Eastbourne Town was postponed. The U12s shared 6 goals with Lancing Rangers and the U14s completed the line-up with a 2-3 loss at Sompting & Thistle. You can keep up-to-date with all the youth teams results this season via the revamped youth pages, here.

05-SEP-2009: Horsham 2 Carshalton Athletic 2

Tony Nwachukwu inspired an exciting Horsham fightback to overcome a 2-0 half-time deficit at home to Carshalton Athletic and gain a deserved share of the points in a classic game of two halves at Gorings Mead. The Hornets looked destined for a third successive defeat when headers from Richard Jolly and Lewis Gonsalves gave the Robins a two goal lead after just 25 minutes and only crucial saves from Rob Tolfrey kept the hosts in the game. But a spectacular strike from Nwachukwu gave Horsham hope after the break and Lee Carney drew the sides level with a penalty, four minutes later. Both sides had chances to win it during an end-to-end second half with Jolly putting a shot just wide and Ben Andrews and Steve Davies both sending dipping efforts just off target. Report....

04-SEP-2009: Horsham v Carshalton Athletic: MATCH PREVIEW

Steve Davies returns to the squad for Saturday's match against a Carshalton Athletic side reeling from the departure this week of Hayden Bird. The Robins' boss cited 'serious issues off the field of play' for his decision to quit the Colston Avenue outfit who will be led this weekend by Head Coach Ian Hazel. Hornets supremo John Maggs will be hopeful that Gary Charman is fit again after missing the last 2 matches through injury while Delando Smith will keep his place at full-back after making his debut at Hastings on Monday.
