Matt Bulley’s under 14s were back in
County Cup action today in the replay of last week's abandoned
fixture.
Horsham very nearly suffered an early setback when, in the 2nd minute,
Dan Petchey was adjudged to have pushed a Devils player in the back
inside the area. George Borer’s first action was to face a penalty,
the resulting strike was dragged left and hit the outside of the post.
In the 9th minute, with both teams
pressing hard, Horsham almost took the lead when a cross from the
right found Matt Clarke free on the far post. Two minutes later, new
signing Josh Clack controlled a long ball and slotted home firmly to
put the Hornets ahead. A further two minutes had elapsed when the lead
was doubled when a rattled Crawley defence failed to clear and Clack
produced a great turn and found the bottom right of the net.
With both sides putting on the pressure,
the Horsham players had a strong appeal turned down in the 27th minute
when the ball appeared to have been bundled over the Crawley line.
Horsham finally got their 3rd when David O’Callaghan’s solo run ended
with the ball being passed past the keeper and Clack was on hand to
tap in for his hat trick. In the last minutes of the half, Crawley
clawed one back when Joss Knowles, having made a superb tackle, then
headed into his own goal from the resulting corner.
The second half carried on with both
sides pushing hard and, on 45 minutes, Horsham were nearly rewarded
when Dan Petchey just headed over the top from a corner. Horsham were
again starting to get the upper hand and, 24 minutes into the half,
Clack scored his 4th after a solo run from a throw in on the right.
The Devils were straight back and, within a minute, they pulled one
back with a headed goal from a cross on the left.
Not to be outdone, the young Hornets
restored the three goal margin within minutes when a shot by George
Hall was deflected over the Crawley 'keeper. The remaining 9 minutes
saw Horsham comfortably keep Crawley at bay and they now progress to
the 4th round where they meet Hailsham United Juniors at home.
