Tommy Warrilow had a happy
return to the Atspeed Stadium as his Tonbridge side came away with a
deserved three points against a Horsham side that finished with nine
men. A 36th minute goal from Fraser Logan put the Kent side in control
before second half strikes from Akwashi Edusei and Tommy Tyne gave
Tonbridge a 3-0 win that flattered the home side. To compound
Horsham’s misery they lost Lee Carney to injury, having already made
their three substitutions, and then also had Lewis Taylor sent off in
injury time.
Tonbridge went into the match with fresher legs having had their game
on Saturday postponed but that also had its down side as it meant Carl
Rook had to sit out the match against his former employers as he
served a suspension held over from that cancelled match. There were
some familiar faces, however, with John Westcott lining up on the
right hand side of midfield whilst Cliff Cant took his place along
side Warrillow in the dug out.
Tonbridge started the stronger side with Kevin Hemsley picking up a
harsh booking in the second minute for a challenge on Ray Powell. Kirk
Watts fired wide the first chance of the game before the lively Edusei
forced Paul Seuke to save with his legs in the tenth minute. Seuke
then required lengthy treatment before Edusei curled a shot wide in
the 23rd minute. Watts then saw his shot deflect wide two minutes
later and then Westcott saw an effort held by Seuke as the visitors
did all the early running.
Anthony Storey looped a shot just wide in the 33rd minute before
Horsham finally worked Tonbridge goalkeeper Matt Reed when Lee Farrell
fired a long range shot goalwards but Reed was able to make a
comfortable save.
Logan
opened the scoring nine minutes before the interval when he neatly
side-stepped Andy Howard and beat Seuke with a low left footed shot
from just inside the area. Edusei then spurned another good opening a
minute later when he produced a nice turn in the area before blasting
over from eight yards.
Carney was then fortunate to only be shown a yellow card for a high
challenge on James Donavan before John Maggs replaced Howard with
Yinka Salaam at the interval.

The visitors came flying out of the traps for the second half with
Seuke producing an excellent save to keep out John Beales’ header and
then saving bravely to deny Logan a minute later.
Taylor then had Horsham’s best opportunity of the match when he raced
clear but, with just Reed to beat, he fired his effort into the side
netting. That proved a pivotal moment in the match as
Edusei
outpaced
Eddie French to fire past Seuke moments later to double the visitors'
lead. Maggs replaced Farrell and Simon Austin with Danny Davis and
Steve Davies as he looked for a way back into the match but, soon after,
Carney picked up what looked like a rib injury and became a bystander
in the match. Taylor and Beales were both cautioned for dissent before
Tonbridge thought they had scored a third in the 69th minute when
Watts crossed for Edusei who found the net with an acrobatic overhead
kick. Having high fived the away fans his celebrations were cut short
thanks to an offside flag.
Logan had an effort blocked in the 75th minute before Carney finally
limped off. That left more space on the pitch and
Tyne
took full
advantage of the numerical imbalance by waltzing clear to calmly round Seuke to tap into an empty
net, three minutes from time. A disappointing afternoon for the Hornets
ended with Taylor receiving his marching orders in stoppage time. He
was harshly penalised for a foul on Scott Kinch and showed his
frustration by throwing the ball to the ground. The referee produced a
second yellow card and by the time the referee blew for full time,
most of the home fans were halfway up the lane on their way home.
